The Renaissance was a time of rediscovery of Classical Greek philosophy. This new thinking became manifest in art, architecture, politics, science, and literature. Although the Renaissance saw revolutions in many area's is perhaps best known for its artistic developments and the contributions of artists including Michelangelo and homo universalis - Leonardo da Vinci.
While Medieval philosophy places heavy interest on the theological, in the Renaissance people were more interested in a more humanistic way of thinking, aimed at paradise on earth. The ideas of the Greek Classical philosopher Plato reemerged in a movement that was called Neoplatonism, teaching that perfect proportions of man reflect something of the harmony of the universe, connecting the microcosms and the macrocosmos. In this regard, Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man can be seen as a symbol for the High Renaissance.
These days, about 500 years later, a similar interest in the harmony of the universe can be seen. With the industrialisation as an accelerator, we have grown into a globalized world with many challenges, from ecological as well as societal and in the field of economics. We have created a kind of complexity in which challenges have arisen, that are not easy to solve from the rational mind (that was leading during the Age of Enlightenment, also known as the Age of Reason, up until current times).
This time period, with the challenges that we face, asks something different from us. It asks us to feel the heart, to reconnect with nature, to find back the harmony of the universe. And we're growing into that.
